SkyScan-1078: Specification

SkyScan-1078 High-throughput in-vivo / in-vitro micro-CT system

The SkyScan 1078 is an ultra-fast micro-CT system for high throughput in-vivo and in-vitro scanning of small laboratory animals, and for material science / process control applications. The X-ray scanner contains two source-detector pairs on the rotational gantry, and allows objects to remain static during scanning. Up to 8 dual-processor computers on a local network can reconstruct full 3d-volume directly during acquisition. The typical scanning+reconstruction cycle for 512x512x512 pixels cube with 94um pixel size is 55 seconds. The instrument is supplied with full physiological monitoring for in-vivo small animal scanning, including colour real-time imaging of the animal during investigation. The scanner can operate fully automatically from a front panel pushbutton.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Scanning area 48mm in diameter, 140mm in length (48x48x48mm cube can be scanned in once)
X-ray sources two sealed air-cooled X-ray tubes 20-65kV, 40W each
X-ray detectors two 1280x1024x12bit digital X-ray cameras, typical exposure is 140ms, min.exposure is 20ms
Reconstruction arrays full isotropic cube of 512x512x512 @ 94um pixel size or 1024x1024x1024 @ 47um pixel size.
Scanning time 49sec @ 94um pixel size, 1.44deg. rotational steps, 3min15sec @ 47um pixel size, 0.72 deg. rotational steps
Reconstruction time
512x512x512 (94um pixels): 34sec @ 4 nodes reconstruction engine,
1024x1024x1024 (47um pixels): 8min @ 4 nodes reconstruction engine.
Reconstruction performed by all nodes simultaneously with next acquisition in HostPC.
Computers configuration
Host: Workstation with fastest Intel-XEON processor(s), 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, internal DVD rewriter, 19-inch UltraSharp LCD screen, integrated Gigabit (10/100/1000) network, two digital frame-grabbers, one color analogue frame-grabber, Windows-XP Professional.
Nodes: 4 Dual-core Intel-XEON workstations, 2GB RAM , integrated Gigabit (10/100/1000) network, Windows-XP Professional.
Networking: Gigabit network switch for communication between host and nodes, monitor/mouse/keyboard switch.
Software package Scanner control with simultaneous acquisition from two cameras, data distribution for several "reconstructor" PCs during acquisition, simultaneous volumetric (cone-beam) reconstruction of full scanning volume by up to 8 PCs through network with collection all results onto host-computer. 2D / 3D image processing and analysis, 3D-rendering, virtual manipulation with reconstructed object. All results calibrated in HU.
Data formats BMP for results and 3D-movies, conversion to TIFF, JPG, AVI, DICOM
Reconstruction algorithm Networkable multithread reconstruction by modified Feldkamp algorithm with volumetric (cone-beam) geometry.
Radiation safety <1uSv/h average during full scan at 20cm from the instrument surface
